On the Road and In the Air
Ghana, Africa

In July 2007, The INS Group President, Ruth Peebles, traveled to Ghana, Africa. Ms. Peebles toured four cities: Accra, Elmina, Kumasi and Akosombo.

The nonprofit sector in West Africa is a varied one including groups as diverse as religious organizations, neighborhood development associations, hometown associations, international NGOs, and sport and recreation groups. The nonprofit sector generally remains vulnerable. Most nonprofits struggle with uncertain and irregular income and are dependent on overseas funding. In some cases nonprofits depend on foreign donors and as a result the nonprofit’s autonomy is often limited and they have to adopt the agenda of funders. Clearly there is a need for nonprofits to take the initiative in seeking sources of sustainable funding and there is a great need and opportunity for funders and international organizations to offer support to local nonprofits.

The Nonprofit Tour

The INS Group visited the following nonprofits in Ghana:

W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture
A source of inspiration to many, the Center houses W.E. B Dubois’ personal library, gallery of manuscripts, as well as the grave of this famous African-American scholar and his wife. The Center features photographs, archives, his academic awards, his tomb as well as the ashes of Mrs. Dubois and the house in which he lived in Ghana before his death.
